1. Don't ask for gifts. It's tacky. Even if you have a minimal list full of free gifts you've snagged from various trading communities, ask for trades and specify that your list is small. No one likes a greedy trader, and I'm more than willing to make an exception for you if you're humble about being new (or victim of a hard drive crash) than if you ask flat out : "Would you gift me this?"
2. Free gifts from trading communities are your best friends. D'load a wide variety of these things. See above for reasons why.
3. Don't collect just Wicked. If your list is just Wicked, it's going to be pretty small. A variety of different shows will help you trade with people who don't like Wicked but that collect Wicked items (see below).
4. Collect Wicked. Even if you hate the show, there are a lot of traders who have a variety of different items and who hate Wicked, but collect Wicked because they know it's the "it" thing to collect. There are new Wicked DVDs arriving every week, and the Wicked fans go crazy for anything they don't have (my note: OMG who are you telling that *lol). Since these traders more than likely follow rule 3, you can use your "new" Wicked DVD to trade for something you actually want, like Gypsy :)
5. If you're a YouTube trader, don't put any of your stuff online. Yeah, it's all illegal anyway, but you need to :
6. Respect the master's wishes. Tons of DVDs aren't being released because idiots put the videos on YouTube and Equity is alerted, thus making it more and more difficult for masters to film/record shows. If you're going to put things on YouTube, use your own masters and not someone else's.
7. You don't trade "VOB sets." A VOB set is a DVD, just in VOB file.
8. If you trade DVDs via VOBs, make sure the small files are included. You cannot burn the DVD without these files. If you do a trade and they aren't included, ID the person you traded with for them, and track those suckers down. If you're going to download 4 gigs of video, you might as well get it off your hard drive and burn it to DVD.
9. When you trade VOBs, make sure the disc can be burned properly before handing out the links. That means downloading each DVD before you trade, and even make sure the files are burnable. That way if the links you are using (that aren't yours) go out, you have ways to reupload for the person you traded with. Nothing is more irritating than Megauplaoding deleting one portion of a DVD and the person you traded for not be able to upload it because they were "just given the links."
10. VOBs are 3-4 gigabytes in size. Online videos are not. DO NOT try to pass online videos off as DVDs.
11. Have common sense. Use proper grammar, capitalization ect in your emails and trading community posts. If you're old enough to trade, you're old enough to know how to punctuate sentences and spell words correctly.
12. Reply to every trading email you recieve, even if it is to say no. If you're polite, someday that trader may have something you do want and it's best not to burn any bridges.
13. There really is no such thing as a "rare" video. Masters rarely say, "Limited trades" or "mark as rare" when they release their DVDs. In my experience, most "rare" items are usually not worth the bloated trading ratios you exchange for them.
14. Some traders exchange DVDs on a disc-by-disc ratio, which is ok. Respect these ratios, but don't be afraid to speak up if you think the trading ratios are unfair.
15. Don't film 13 minutes of the Legally Blonde Tour on your camera phone and say you have a new DVD master for release.
16. If you do film and 90% of the show is your Uncle Louis' head, don't release it or ask people to pay you for it. If you do, state upfront that the show is highlights and heavily blacked out.
17. If you're a 13 year old trader and want to make money, don't sell your DVDs for $25 apeice. Get your footing in the trading world before setting your list up for sale. Then, you'll realize how heavily inflated $25 is for a DVD you didn't even master (also, personal pet peeve: Don't sell VOBs. These are links we're giving away. Little bits of text. If the person you're selling to is old enough to pay online for bootlegs, then they are old enough to recieve snail mail. Plus, links can expire before people download, leaving them with nothing. Not fair.)
18. If you gift anything to a trading community, make sure they are your own links. The links I send you can be used for further trades, but please don't post them as gifts onmuscial trading communities. If you wish to gift, please reupload and post your own links.
Even if its something stupid like downloading a file and then reuploading on your own account, do it. Especailly VOBs (but, I belong in the camp that VOBs should be rarely gifted, if even at all, so take this with a grain of salt). There's nothing more annoying that spending hours uploading a VOB for someone, and the next week having your links pop up as a "free gifty" somewhere else
19. Don't gift something to a tradee in order to get what you want in return. I don't care if you just gifted me a replacement DVD; let me choose for myself what I want from your list instead of backhanding me to get what you're after.
20. Keep your list up-to-date and include as much cast info as you know. Even if all you have is the date, include that. Many trading sites probably have the cast information you're looking for, and once you find it, update accordingly.
21. If you trade VOBs but are a slow downloader, that is what a "Coming Soon" page is for. Don't add it to your list until you physically have the DVD or the files are on a hard drive.
22. If you ask someone to trade and they say no, leave 'em alone. Don't bother them (see above for the definition of "burning bridges"). They told you no, now move on. Also, if you request someone's list but upon getting it realize there is nothing you want, tell them so. Don't ignore them. That's just rude.
23. If your audios are untracked or unlabeled, mark as so on your list. I have a few audios of shows that I have no idea what the songs are, and it's frustrating to put a billion "Act 1" files on one iPod.
24. If you are for some reason gifting a fairly recent VOB, wait a while to do so, around 6 months or so. Usually, someone paid money for the DVD you're gifting, and you wouldn't want your 20 dollars getting splurged on the internet 1 month after the Not for Trade Until date has passed. Have respect for the people who made the sacrifice to pay and get the DVD released for trading in the first place. |
